Although the assignment for this week was to listen to a relaxation exercise entitled "The Crime of the Century" when I clicked on the link I heard the "Rainbow Meditation" exercise.
I have done this exercise once before in my Stress Management class, last term. It is a short exercise, but I didn't feel like I really connected with it this time. I was able to mentally picture the colors and the light emitting from my body, but it felt kind of distant to me. I think I can focus better imagining things that are real to me.
That being said, I have considered my well being in terms of the physical, spiritual and psychological.
On a scale from 1-10, I would have to rate my physical well-being at about a 7.5. I am physically healthy but have some things to work on, namely my fitness level and my weight. My spiritual well-being would have to rate at about an 8. I am very comfortable with my faith, it is very strong. I do pray and believe in that communication. My psychological well-being has been undergoing a revitalization in the past few months. Right now, I would give it a 7. That is one area where I am continuing to work toward some healing.
My goals for each of these areas would be as follows:
Physical- lose weight by eating less and exercising more.
Spiritual- make more connections in my community with people in my church
Psychological- work on wholeness and fully embrace my new surroundings.
In order to work toward these goals, I can implement the following activities or exercises:
Physical- Wake up at 6 am to go to the gym. Walk the dogs daily.
Spiritual- Join study groups or a ministry group at my church. Volunteer with the Red Cross.
Psychological- spend time in meditation at least a few times a week, to embrace my new life and recognize the gift that has been given to me instead of being sad that I had to move.
Hello Cheri,
ReplyDeleteI felt the same way I didn't really connect with it either. I couldn't associate the colors and areas they were suppose to work with. It was just to hard for me to get into it. However the man talking had such a soft voice that I was very relaxed.
My goals are to start exercising, meditating and relaxation exercises, and have a more positive outlook. It is so easy to say all of these things but it hard to actually do them. I have 3 classes this term so doing anything extra will be a definite challenge.
Good luck to you on your goals,
Hi Cheri
ReplyDeleteMy blog post looks very similar to yours because I felt the exact same way. It was very difficult for me to engage in the exercise because it was so abstract. I love the way you actually spelled out your plan for meeting your goals. I believe you have to have goals and a plan or you will never meet your goals. It is easy to say I want to lose 15 pounds, but unless you can map out your diet and fitness plan to go along with that goal, it is really just a dream.

Hi Cheri,
ReplyDeleteI agree about the lack of connecting with this exercise. I also was a little disappointed when I found out it was the rainbow exercise. Crime of the Century and relaxing don't seem like they should be in the same sentence, and I was curious to see what that was all about! It is hard to relate yourself to colors emitting from your body. Like you said it is easy to visualize, just difficult to relate to. I personally like the exercises where you visual places you would like to be like the beach or by a warm fire.
No matter what level we are in physically I think we could all use a little less eating, at least of typical American processed foods, and more exercise. I am a group fitness instructor and work in a gym so if you have any questions or need help finding a program to start let me know, I would love to help :)
Hi Cheri,
ReplyDeleteI to have to find the time to include exercise in my busy day. I does seem that when I get too busy that my workout is the 1st thing I let slip. But, I have found that if I combine some part of my workout with my prayer time, it helps the workout to go by much quicker. For example: walking while I pray, or stating "thankful" phases each time I'm lifting weights instead of counting. I have found that I can do a lot more and have a better workout when I do this. Maybe you could try something like this to help with your workout. Also, "happy" music while you're clean helps to get the heart rate up, too! :)
Thanks,
Darlene
Thanks for the suggestions Darlene! I think those are great and I will try next time I am working out, or walking!
ReplyDeleteI feel the same why about my faith and God. I need to do more with my church. Community wise, I make desserts for the homeless shelter and I love doing it. There was a time in my life that I did not have a home so I can relate. I can't really suggest anything else to you about the relaxation exercise. But it is a good tool to use if you want to sleep, lol. I did!
